Reducing Environmental Footprint: Recycled Polyester Yarn

About half of the World’s clothing and accessories are manufactured using polyester, and this amount will nearly double by 2030. Reason? Recycled Polyester

Recycled polyester, also known as RPET, is obtained by melting down discarded plastics and re-spinning it into new polyester fibre. Polyethene terephthalate (PET) can be recycled from both post-industrial and post-consumer materials. By using plastic bottles and containers discarded by the consumers, RPET is formed. The PET scraps are broken into fibre components that can then be spin into the recycled yarns.

Recycled Polyester Yarn Process

Cleaning
PET bottles are picked and sorted into packages at recycling centres and then sent to specific PET recycling facilities. The caps and labels of the bottles and containers are removed and cleaned. Further, they are steamed and washed to remove any non-PET components.

Shredding
The bottles are shredded into flakes using a mechanical bale breaker. Shredding allows the unwanted liquid(water, soda, cold drinks etc.)to drain out. So that It does not affect the quality of Plastic. This waste is valuable, mainly for the fashion industry. Later, the clear plastics are assorted from the coloured plastics. The cleared plastics are used to make white clothes. It can be dyed so, it is notably valuable.

Processing
It goes through de-polymerisation and re-polymerisation process to be rebuilt into PET chips. These PET chips can be further processed to make clothing, insulation, new water bottles, etc.

Melting
The chips are then passed through a spinner and melted. It instantly cools as it comes out of spinners and turns into fine polyester filaments. These are then smoothed, stretched and placed into reels to roll as a bundle.

The recycled yarn is ready to be used for weaving or knitting into the fabric again. Polyester Waste Recycling has the same aesthetics and operative performance as regular polyester yarn. Recycled polyester gives a new life to a material which is non-biodegradable and would otherwise end up in the ocean and landfills, which is harmful to the water bodies and other animals. Recycled polyester is the same as regular polyester in terms of quality, but its production requires 59 per cent less energy compared to virgin polyester. It reduces CO2 emissions by 32 per cent in comparison to regular polyester.
